Emerald Nutrition: Greens Supplement for Fasting & Feasting

Julia Błoszyk

Fasting is rooted in the beginnings of humankind – when humans would undergo a several hour to several day-long fast while hunting, gathering and looking for supplies. Nowadays, with the development of the economy and agriculture – most of us live in abundance; we no longer have to worry about the availability of food, it is easy to reach out for snacks and overconsume calories without even thinking about it.

Ancient Chinese fasting practicesFasting and spirituality

Fasting has been an integral part of religions and philosophies all over the world.

Fasting has been a long-standing practice in the Chinese culture – believed to help practitioners slow down ageing, detoxify the body and the balance the body’s energy - giving the body a break from being under constant strain and constantly being in a work-mode. It is also a great medium to achieve a higher state of being and mental clarity through abstaining from physical and mental distractions.

Easter - one of the most important periods in Christianity. It is preceded by a 40-day period of Lent – linked to abstinence of certain foods and indulgences like meats, sweets, and alcohol. It usually includes fasting and restricting the intake of animal products, and the amount of food eaten. It is a detox for the mind – time to be spent on reflection, prayer and self-discipline; and for the body - before feasting with fatty meals, meats, eggs, and sweets.

Just like the period of Lent in Christianity, Ramadan in the Muslim world is a month of fast from dawn to sunset: abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations - time dedicated to spiritual reflection and devotion.

Breaking fast at Ramadan

Intermittent fasting

Fasting has been valued for its wisdom and health benefits for centuries — a practice that modern life has largely set aside. However, in recent years, fasting has made a strong comeback as a popular dietary approach, thanks to its many proven health benefits. Some of the most common methods include:

16:8 or 14:10 fasting – limiting eating to a short daily window of 8–10 hours, while fasting for the remaining hours.

5:2 fasting – reducing calorie intake to around 500–600 kcal on two days of the week, while eating normally on the other five.

The health benefits of intermittent fasting include:

Fasting might not be suitable for everyone with coexisting medical conditions, it is advised to contact a healthcare professional before attempting to fast.

How to break a fast

The transition from fasting to feasting can be quite challenging for the body. For this reason, it is important to keep a good regime – a clean diet, rich in fibre - to ensure adequate nutrition for the body and prevent bloating and digestive discomfort during celebrations.

When breaking a fast it is important to have a nutritionally balanced meal which will restore all the vitamins and minerals, kicking our metabolism back off without a sudden spike in blood sugar levels. We should not eat too fast and have a meal that is not too high in fat – to prevent digestive upset.

It is generally advised to focused on a balanced diet and hydration around fasting– to make sure we prevent dehydration, feeling of fatigue, dizziness, migraines and nutritional deficiencies.
