Best UK AG1 Alternative — Emerald Nutrition Supergreens
The UK AG1 Alternative for People Who Read the Supplement Facts
Most "AG1 alternatives" in the UK make the same pitch: cheaper, similar, good enough. Emerald Nutrition takes a different position.
60+ research-led ingredients. Every dose disclosed. No proprietary blends. Third-party tested — Certificates of Analysis viewable on every product page. Made in the UK. Backed by independent academic research at the University of Nottingham. Recognised as Best UK Supplement Company 2025 by the Prestige Awards.
If those things matter to you, this is your shortlist of one.
The credibility row
- Best UK Supplement Company 2025 — Prestige Awards
- Nourish Award winner — UK supplement industry recognition
- Vegan Product Choice Award Winner - Vegan industry recognition
- UK Start Up Awards 2026 — finalist
- Multiple finalist shortlists across UK supplement and entrepreneurship awards
- Independent academic research partner — De Montfort University Sports Clinic, ongoing single-arm Supergreens study
To our knowledge, AG1 holds no comparable UK industry-award recognition and has no published independent academic research partnership. Neither does any other major branded greens product currently sold into the UK.
What people actually want when they search "AG1 alternative"
If you're searching for an AG1 alternative, you're usually one of three people:
- The price-sensitive AG1 user. The AG1 monthly cost adds up. You want a similar daily greens powder for less, without losing what you liked.
- The transparency-frustrated user. AG1's supplement facts list "proprietary blends" — which means you don't know how much of each ingredient you're getting. You want a powder that tells you exactly what's in every serving.
- The UK-first buyer. AG1 is American. Imported. You'd rather buy from a UK brand making in the UK, with verifiable UK academic research behind it.
Emerald Supergreens is a credible answer for all three.
The honest comparison
Side-by-side, transparently. Emerald figures from the published Pineapple supplement facts panel (per 12 g serving). AG1 figures from publicly available reviews and Athletic Greens' own ingredient pages. Please consult each brand's live supplement facts panel for the most current information.

What AG1 doesn't have
Beyond ingredient disclosure, Emerald includes vitamins and minerals that AG1 either omits or includes only in trace amounts. Three matter most:
Vitamin D — 2.5 µg per serving (50% NRV) in Emerald. None / trace in AG1. The NHS recommends 10 µg per day, especially through autumn and winter when sun exposure is limited. UK adults are widely deficient. Your daily greens should help; Emerald does, AG1 doesn't meaningfully.
Iron — 7 mg per serving (50% NRV) in Emerald. Trace only in AG1. Iron supports red blood cell formation and oxygen transport, with relevance for women, vegetarians, and endurance athletes. A trace amount is not equivalent to a 50% NRV daily contribution.
Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) — 37.5 µg per serving (50% NRV) in Emerald. Not listed in AG1. Vitamin K1 supports normal blood clotting; K2 (which both products list) is associated with bone and cardiovascular function. The two are not interchangeable.
AG1 dose-bombs Vitamin C (~420 mg, ~467% NRV) and Vitamin B12 (~22 µg, ~917% NRV) — both far above NRV. Emerald sets every vitamin and mineral at NRV-aligned levels (typically 50% NRV per serving), which is the dose level the EU NRV system was designed for. Different product philosophy: Emerald formulates to NRV, AG1 mega-doses on a few headline vitamins.
Backed by independent academic research at De Montfort University
Emerald Supergreens is, to our knowledge, the only premium UK greens powder backed by an active independent academic research programme.
The work is led by De Montfort University (DMU), with Dr Harprit Singh and Dr Mariasole at the DMU labs. The programme runs in two phases:
Phase 1 — in-vitro work on human cells (already completed at the DMU labs). Early findings are promising but not conclusive. Across the cell-level assays, the team observed: increases in ATP levels (cell-level energy markers), positive immuno-response indicators when cells were challenged with viral antigens, and reductions in inflammatory markers. These are pre-clinical, cellular-level findings — not clinical endpoints. They are the kind of signals that justify investing in a live human study.
Phase 2 — live population study (now underway). Run with DP Sports Clinic, who provide the participant population — a single-arm qualitative study across 50–55 UK participants examining the daily-use experience of Emerald Supergreens. The protocol is run independently of Emerald Nutrition; we provide product, DMU and DP Sports Clinic run the work, results are theirs to publish whatever they show.
AG1 publishes no comparable independent academic partnership. To our knowledge, no other major branded greens product currently sold in the UK has one either.
This matters because supplement category claims usually rest on ingredient-level research applied to the formulation. Emerald is taking the next step: studying the formulation itself, in-vitro then in a live population, with two academic clinicians on the record.

Real founders, a real-world problem
Emerald is built by three real, named, verifiable co-founders.
- Mike Anaxagorou — principal founder & CEO. 20+ year track record in commercial leadership across construction and architectural sales. Built Emerald to be the brand he couldn't find for himself: science-led, transparently formulated, designed for adult performance rather than gym-bro marketing.
- Dr Carolina Gomez Cuenca — co-founder. PhD in Economics from the University of Nottingham. Co-formulated the original Supergreens product with Mike — modelled on what they wanted out of a best-in-class daily ritual. Now provides finance and strategic counsel.
- Dr Vincenzo Di Bari — co-founder, science lead. Assistant Professor in Food Structure and Processing at the University of Nottingham. PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham. Leads scientific analysis, product development, and compliance. View University of Nottingham profile
AG1 is a brand. Emerald is three named people you can look up — including two University of Nottingham academics. The team behind the formula, on the record, defending the choices.

How to choose between the two
If you'd rather a brand-name daily greens powder with global recognition, mega-dosed Vitamin C and B12, and you trust the proprietary-blend disclosure model, AG1 is a reasonable choice.
If you want NRV-aligned vitamins (including Vitamin D and Iron — both notably absent or trace in AG1), every dose disclosed, a brand recognised as Best UK Supplement Company 2025, named UK academic co-founders, and ongoing independent research at a UK university, Emerald is the more direct answer.
Take the question of third-party testing seriously. Both brands claim it; only one (currently) makes the certificates available without subscription friction. Ask for a CoA before you buy from anyone.
Frequently asked questions
Is Emerald Supergreens a like-for-like AG1 alternative?
Functionally, yes — same daily greens powder category, similar overall ingredient breadth (60+ vs 83). The meaningful differences are: Emerald discloses every dose individually; Emerald includes Vitamin D and Iron at 50% NRV (AG1 has neither in meaningful amounts); Emerald is UK-made; Emerald is backed by independent academic research at De Montfort University; Emerald has been recognised as Best UK Supplement Company 2025 by the Prestige Awards. Emerald Supergreens has also won multiple awards including Vegan Product Choice Award and Nourish Award.
Does Emerald contain Vitamin D? Does AG1?
Emerald Supergreens contains 2.5 µg of Vitamin D per 12 g serving (50% NRV). According to publicly available reviews and Athletic Greens' own ingredient page, AG1 contains virtually no Vitamin D. UK adults are widely Vitamin D deficient — the NHS recommends 10 µg per day, especially through autumn and winter. Your daily greens powder should help. Emerald does, AG1 doesn't meaningfully.
Does Emerald contain Iron? Does AG1?
Emerald Supergreens contains 7 mg of Iron per 12 g serving (50% NRV). Per published reviews of AG1, iron is present only in trace amounts. Iron is essential for oxygen transport and energy production, with particular relevance for women, vegetarians, and endurance athletes.
Is Emerald backed by independent academic research?
Yes. The research is led by De Montfort University (DMU), with Dr Harprit Singh and Dr Mariasole at the DMU labs. Phase 1 in-vitro work on human cells is complete — early findings include increased ATP levels, positive immuno-response indicators against viral antigens, and reductions in inflammatory markers at the cellular level. These are promising but not conclusive pre-clinical findings, which is why we have moved to Phase 2: a live population study run with DP Sports Clinic across 50–55 UK participants. Both phases are run independently of Emerald Nutrition. Results will be published whatever they show. To our knowledge, AG1 has no comparable independent academic research partnership.
What awards has Emerald won?
Emerald Nutrition has been recognised as Best UK Supplement Company 2025 by the Prestige Awards, has won at the Nourish Awards, Vegan Product Choice Award and has been shortlisted as a finalist for the UK Start Up Awards 2026, alongside additional finalist placings across multiple UK supplement and entrepreneurship awards.
Who founded Emerald?
Three named co-founders: Mike Anaxagorou (principal founder & CEO; 20+ years in construction and architectural sales), Dr Carolina Gomez Cuenca (PhD Economics, University of Nottingham; co-formulated the original Supergreens), and Dr Vincenzo Di Bari (Assistant Professor in Food Structure and Processing, University of Nottingham; science lead; PhD Chemical Engineering, University of Birmingham).
What does "no proprietary blends" actually mean?
A proprietary blend is when a manufacturer lists a group of ingredients with one combined weight, instead of a per-ingredient dose. It's legal — but it makes it impossible for you to know how much of each ingredient you're getting per serving. Emerald lists every ingredient with its individual dose. Read more on our quality & testing page.
Is Emerald third-party tested?
Yes. Every batch is tested by an independent UK lab for heavy metals, microbial contamination, and ingredient potency. The latest Certificate of Analysis is viewable on every product page — click "View CoA" on any PDP.
Where is Emerald manufactured?
In the UK, by a contract manufacturer accredited to the standards required by UK food supplement law.
How does Emerald compare to Lean Greens, Huel Daily Greens, or Free Soul?
Each brand has a different angle: Lean Greens emphasises raw freeze-dried vegetables; Huel is a meal-replacement company that's added a daily greens product; Free Soul positions for women. Emerald's position is the most transparent ingredient panel of the four, paired with the only ongoing independent academic research partnership in the UK premium-greens category. We'll publish more detailed head-to-head comparisons shortly. In the meantime, see Emerald's full ingredient list at our ingredients page.
